Seems like I'm always writing about workplace bullies and mobbing. The logical assumption is that I'm an expert on dealing with these situations. Well, yes and no...
I'm very good at identifying bullies and mobs almost immediately-their snide behavior and obvious body language and facial expressions are a dead giveaway. I have taken on and defeated these types in the past. However, due to the long and emotionally draining nature of crushing these nasties, I advise preventative action before entering into battle. These folks are like cancer-do things to keep them away...
It is with some amusement therefore that I have heard from my sweet lady Sly that some folks where I used to work are up to their old tricks. This time the mob of front-office evildoers are planning put one of their own in charge of the whole company following a promotion of the general manager. No mind that none of them is fit to organize a company picnic, much less a busy convention center; that none have the disposition or education to deal with the public relations and accounting issues; or have any real agenda for the future other than to finally rule the henhouse and get rid of everyone they dislike.
They are openly saying that they'll quit if their demands are not met. Does any of this sound familiar?...
Right now, I'll make the following predictions about what will happen, assuming they're foolish enough to actually place their demands on the table:
- They'll will receive no reply on this, or be put off indefinitely.
- The acting manager they propose to get rid of will bring in lots of her cronies, at their expense.
- Over a period of a few months, say from here to next spring, the cliques' members will leave, re-align with the new regime, or be fired.
The point of this? Why none, of course. We're talking about behaviors that would earn a junior high school student after-school detentions.
My only solace is that this will bring an end to a very nasty group of bullies, and that my sweet lady Sly is immune to their poison. If these bullies only knew the comic relief they provide to others in her department...
