Leave the A/C on already!

I work on the twentysomething floor of a big office building with a high profile address in a large city. This building turns the air off on nights (6pm-7am-ish) and weekends so today I walk in and it's a sweltering 95 degrees in here. That's with a box fan AND room A/C floor unit both on. I'm just amazed that in 2007 office buildings still do this. I realize property management only cares about $$$ and not if we all pass out in here so wouldn't it be more cost effective to leave the air on low so it wouldn't have to work so hard to get from 95 to a comfortable level? I realize I'm not outside working construction but c'mon this is a joke.

Take this as a sign that you should not be working so late... =) My old office did the same thing... only at 5pm! You'd hear the office suddenly go silent... and in the summer... it would start to get stuffy and hot almost immediately. Very uncomfortable working conditions. So I'd leave! =)

That's even worse that they shut it off! Why should you get a worse work environment then everyone else? Have you complained to the building supervisor?

This is gonna sound really stupid, but I'm one of those wierdos who can work in a stuffy office and be perfectly fine. If anything, I prefer it to be a little extra warm... which is bad for the computers and the server... ^_^ I just can't win!

I spoke to the building they said they could provide 24-7 A/C for a suite tennant at the low low price of $1500 a week. Such a bargain!

coldinhell(08/04/2007)
Who never said it wasn't cold in hell? My job is the complete opposite. The a/c is on 65 degrees ALL DAY - summer or winter. That's just too cold. God forbid you ask for heat - it never comes. And turning down the a/c? Where I live, it's 100 degrees outside, but I have to go outside to warm up every 30 minutes. I swear i can hear my knees crack as I get up from my desk! What is with employers begin cheap a**es with keeping a decent temperature indoors?

dumber than a box of catsh*t(08/04/2007)
I work in a building meant for 1250 people--but 2400 are in the building with no air conditioning and in the winter I have had to teach in a room that is so cold that I teach with multiple layers, a winter coat and gloves. So I really sympathize with bad temperatures in the workplace. When I did complain repeatedly (3X) to the engineer and boss--the engineer had to stay up all night with his crew to pull out all the heaters and work-out the problem. i felt sorry for the engineer. At first the boss after 2 notes to him, came by my room (of course when I was not there) and said to the teacher, "This isn't so bad", but he and the engineer did do something because it is illegal--I can call the health dept. and it is against Union Contract. It was at least 50 degrees--cold! And I think the Boss realized also that I would not be there at work--I would call-in and then all mayhem would occur--remember subs in school? And I work in a major city--Chicago.
